Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships 2017

The Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships took place on Saturday 7th January at Woodbank Park in Stockport. The top 4 athletes in each event guaranteed a place to represent Greater Manchester at the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough in March. Then the next 4 places to make up the team will be decided by the Greater Manchester team managers.

In the under 13 girls race ECH had two representatives with Rose Barlow finishing in a solid 10th position and Katherine Waters finishing 40th. Jake Smith had a good run in the under 15 boys event finishing 24th. The under 15 girls team finished a brilliant 2nd place with great runs from Megan Lewis 5th, Holly Jackson 9th and Abby O’Neil 13th. Keenan Owen had a fantastic run to win the under 17 men’s event by 32 seconds guaranteeing his place in the Greater Manchester team. Lily McGuiness had a strong run in the under 20 women’s race finishing 6th place overall and in with a shout for selection. George Lewis also had a good run in the junior men’s race with a 8th place finish.

ECH had 2 representatives in the senior women’s race with Hayley Simpson having a brilliant run finishing 6th and in with a chance for selection for the Inter Counties. Bethany Hirst finished in a creditable 20th place. Five ECH athlete’s took part in the senior men’s race with Joe Steward having a great run to finish 2nd place and guaranteeing his place in the Inter Counties team and his first senior county vest. Tom McGuinness had a strong run to finish in 8th place and could be in with a chance for selection. Joe Hudak 29th, Derek Hughes 79th and Martin Lewis 109th made up the team which finished in a good 5th position overall.
